Let's talk robotics with Professor Peter Corke

Eps 20: Peter is a distinguished professor of robotic vision at Queensland University of Technology, Director of the QUT Centre for Robotics, and Director of the ARC Centre of Excellence for Robotic Vision. His research is concerned with enabling robots to see, and the application of robots to mining, agriculture and environmental monitoring. He has spent time visiting at Oxford, University of Illinois, Carnegie-Mellon University and the University of Pennsylvania.  He received his undergraduate and Masters degrees in electrical engineering and PhD, all from the University of Melbourne.

He is a fellow of the Australian Academy of Science, a fellow of the Australian Academy of Technology and Engineering, a fellow of the IEEE, former editor-in-chief of the IEEE Robotics & Automation magazine, founding and associate editor of the Journal of Field Robotics, founding multi-media editor and former editorial board member of the International Journal of Robotics Research, member of the editorial advisory board of the Springer Tracts on Advanced Robotics series, member of the board of the International Federation of Robotics (IFRR).

Today we discussed

  • his love for robotics and where it started

  • his research focusses on wheeled, underwater, flying robots for applications such as mining, agriculture and environmental monitoring. Let’s start with mining, what’s been done in that space in Australia and what excites you about it?

  • What’s happening in the agriculture space and who are the people really pushing the research here?

  • Environmental robots such as drones are doing fantastic work – any specific examples that you would like to discuss?

  • discussions about his free courses in robotics –

  • Books written

  • The future of robotics in Australia

  • Career advice regarding robotics

  • What he loves about his job
