Building Resilience in the Workplace

So, What is Resilience?

In times of upheaval, why do some people, communities, companies and systems recover, persist and even thrive while others fall apart?

Resilience is one’s ‘bounce back’ ability that enables people to deal with stresses and strains of daily living.

A Business Case For Building Resilient People

There are well-documented problems and challenges that are linked to people who are not resilient.

On an individual level: Inability to deal competently with stressful situations, increased sickness, adverse work relationships and family problems, propensity for alcohol and drug use and noteworthy emotional dependency on superiors–to mention but a few.

On a company level: This translates to absenteeism, lack of consistent productivity, unexpected resignation of skilled workers, poor-quality decision making, unnecessary workplace conflict as well as a lack of flexibility to respond to changes and challenges in the workplace.

There are 6 key dimensions that underpin the personal development of resilience…

  1. Managing myself when change occurs (Elective)

  2. Self-sufficiency and self-belief (Core)

  3. Compelling hope (Core)

  4. Optimism (Core)

  5. True North (Values)

  6. Choices (Elective)

In this two-day course, we’ll take a look at what resilience is and how it can be learned and implemented. The course consists of 4 modules and at the end of the course people will have increased confidence that they will be able to handle whatever life throws at them and come out the other side stronger and more able to continue to live and enjoyable and worthwhile life.

Modules

  2. Skills how to manage personal responses to change

  3. Support structures an individual has that can be drawn upon

  4. Lays the foundation for skills development for the next four modules

  6. Acquire skills to minimize emotional hemorrhaging, i.e. where one negative experience ‘bleeds’ into another unrelated experience.

  7. Enhance the skill sets of disagreement & diversion to offset an “attack of the negatives”.

5

Module 5: True North - personal values and choices

  2. Opportunity to reflect on one’s life choices using the “5 X Why’ exercise

  3. Delegates explore and reflect on the string of events that have resulted in personal choices made, often unconsciously, their impact on the individual- and how to develop other more successful strategies for their future

  4. Uncover patterns of behaviour and mind sets that result in decisions made that are both empowering and limiting
